Treasures from the Art Retreat

Our artist retreat was April 2-4.  It was an amazing weekend.  Each day Susan, Cathy and Jo had special surprises in store for each of us.

At each table on the first day we received a colorful tote bag with SOAR on it.  We each received a little gift bag with a few treasures.  I am sorry to say I have already stashed them all away.

The yellow bird house below was the invitation for the retreat.
It was filled with information on each days project, supplies needed,
what was provided and templates we would need.

There was a huge nest on the snack table that first day
and these sweet little birdhouses were scattered around the table.
They have the cutest little sign "be Back after S.OA.R"

Our second day we each were presented these beautiful books.
Susan went above and beyond...
I am not sure how many she made, I know it had to be at least ten.

Inside she cut a niche, if you haven't guessed by now the theme of our retreat was birds.

In my niche is this beautiful bird... each bird was a bit different.

The second day the big nest held these beautiful speckled eggs...

The eggs were filled with these precious bird buttons!

When we arrived on the final day each place setting had center piece on a doily,
it was an inverted cone decorated covered in textured paper and a bird.
There were a few flowers and a small paper birdhouse in it.

We  also received these sweet birds made by Jo and Cathy...
the backing is felted wool.

What a wonderful weekend.  One of the attendees came from as far away as London.  The rest of the participants were local artists.  It was a special time with some of the greatest friends an artist can have.

From the bottom of my heart I would like to
 THANK
 Susan, Cathy and Jo
for making this such a special event for all who attended.
You all went above and beyond our expectations!

I just LOVE Graphics 45 Steampunk Debutante Collection

Here I used a few of the Steampunk Debutant Tags
and the Metal Frame Collection from Fancy Pants
to make a few charms I will use in future altered boxes!!!

I found both the paper and the frames at Scrapbook Zone.

MY FINAL PROJECT AT THE ART RETREAT

On Sunday our group met at Echo ArtWorks to make our Treasure Trove Necklace.  Susan lead the project.  With bits of ribbon, charms, beads, findings and more I made my necklace.  I am very happy with the results!!!

With the help of Beth of Echo ArtWorks, the charms,
 brass frame and flying bird
were put into a solution to add the wonderful patina.

The ribbon was intertwined through the chain.

Additional pieces of ribbon were used for knotting.

The focal piece is the brass frame and bird.
Holes were punched in each to use in the necklace.

ANOTHER PROJECT I CREATED AT THE ART RETREAT!

Here is another of my altered boxes... this time I used an old wooden  doll steamer trunk.  I just loved the depth of the box.  Going with a bird theme this time I adhered 7 Gypsies paper to the back of the box with a bit of old sheet music.  The yellow pattern paper is the original paper in the steamer trunk.  My Minds Eye pattern  papers on the the bird houses and the paper banner.

Tim Holtz products - clock face and the number 14.  Melissa Frances - Keyhole.

There are a lot of bits and pieces I picked up here and there.  The grandfather clock is a pencil sharpener. Other treasures: birdhouses, blocks wrapped in paper for birdhouse stands,  empty spools wrapped in paper, dresden foil, sticks with dried moss from my walks, an old fork and spoon, vintage key, poker chip, tiles from the game "Banana Grams",   birds, eggs, vintage jewelry piece, brass crown, brass birds on the spoon, and little bucket with a nest.

I had a lot of fun putting all the things I had gathered together.

A lot of detail in the box.

The original yellow paper is a perfect finish peaking out behind the papers.

Graphic 45 - Steampunk and TIM HOLTZ are NEW ARRIVALS at Scrapbook Zone

You may have been wondering where I have been during the month of March... I participated in an awesome Art Retreat April 1-3.  It took some time to prepare for the three-seven-hour-days of projects.  Plus, if we choose to participate in several swaps that took even more of my time.  There was a fat book swap which we had to prepare 10 pages by March 11th.  I was the individual who put the ten books together.  We had a mini piece of art to prepare that cost less than $3.00 and a bag of stash from our studio to exchange.   My Steampunk altered box (below) was my first day project.  Over the next week I plan to share more of my projects, the fat book and the wonderful treats we received from the retreat.

If you love altered art and Steampunk... You are going to love the Steampunk collection from Graphic 45!  You will find it at the Scrapbook Zone.  Also on display in the store is my Steampunk altered cigar box.

In the box is a vinatge photo, you could use a family photo if you choose to make your own altered box or scrapbook layout.  If you look closely you will find: a metal bobbin, candlestick game piece, king from a chess game, empty thread spool covered with Graphics 45, bead, dollhouse piano, vintage kalalilies, square nail, old key, pen nib, wooden fluerdelis, button and black dresden foil.  Key hole - Melissa Francis, clock face and metal gears Tim Holtz, chip board clock hands and gears - Scrap FX Embellishments, gems - i rock.

Stamps: Measuring tape - unknown, Men with Ferris Wheel and Hot Air Baloon- Artistic Outpost, Column-  , Pen- , Woman Face (behind the lock) -

Papers Graphics 45, old sheet music and tissue paper from a dress pattern.

Front of the box- Graphics 45 paper, with Black Stickles on the wings.

Back of the box - Graphics 45 paper, you can see the drawer pull.

Inside close ups shoots. Chipboard gears are inked in gold and black.  Picture frame is old chipboard painted to give it the old distressed look.  The Ferris Wheel stamped in the background is Artistic Outpost as is the Hot Air Balloon stamped on tissue and adhered to the photo.

Blue & white bead for added dimension.  My glue of choice in this project was Weldbond.  It is a great glue that has been compared to some of the strong glues without the smell!

Piano a piece of doll house furniture.
Look at the wonderful papers that just arrived at the Scrapbook Zone.

 All the images are beautiful.
They would make terrific vintage cards.

We are talking about offering an altered box class at the Scrapbook Zone.
If you would like to make a beautiful altered box and live in Kitsap County
please call the Scrapbook Zone and let them know you are interested.
Get on the list to be called.

Each altered box is so much fun to make,
